As a detergent formulator, what is your biggest nightmare? Is it the scene where “Fragrance goes one way, Water goes another” (Phase separation/Oil floating)? 😫 No matter how premium your fragrance is, if it doesn’t dissolve into the base, it is wasted.
The solution for a crystal-clear, uniform detergent is the PEG 400 Solvent.

1. WHY DO WE NEED PEG 400? 🔗
Water is a polar solvent, while Fragrance is usually non-polar. They naturally “dislike” each other. PEG 400 stands in the middle, holding hands with the Water on one side and the Fragrance on the other, pulling them together. 👉 Result: Fragrance dissolves completely, leaving the detergent crystal clear with zero separation, even after a year on the shelf.

2. NOT JUST DISSOLVING, BUT MOISTURIZING 🤲
While Glycerin can feel sticky, PEG 400 offers a lighter touch. It acts as a Humectant, helping to:
-
Prevent the detergent from drying out or “crusting” at the bottle nozzle (clogging).
-
Keep the user’s hands from drying out (crucial for premium dishwashing liquids).
3. THE SECRET FOR ENZYMATIC (BIO) DETERGENTS 🧬
Here is an expert tip: If you are venturing into Enzymatic Detergents, PEG 400 is mandatory. It stabilizes enzyme activity, keeping the “biological workers” alive in the liquid chemical environment. Without PEG, enzymes can lose their effectiveness within a week.
💡 FORMULATION TIP
Instead of using Ethanol to dissolve fragrance (which evaporates easily and causes cloudiness), try switching to PEG 400. Usage rate: 1% – 3% depending on the fragrance load.
Ecotec currently has stock of PEG 400 (Petronas/Malaysia) in drums and retail cans. Colorless, odorless liquid with excellent pricing.
